Common farmed shrimp diseases in Iran

EMS disease

The cause of EMS or premature death is a type of bacteria. The reason for its name is that post larvae die 20 to 30 days after being stocked in rearing ponds.

EMS disease symptoms

The symptoms of the disease include slow growth, softening of the outer shell, fragmentation of intestinal contents or its emptyness, paleness of the body, whiteness and shrinking of the hepatopancreas. This disease causes a lot of damage to farms, which is sometimes equal to the damage caused by white spot disease.

Tura Syndrome

The causative agent of Tura Syndrome is a type of virus that infects shrimp at all stages of cultivation. This disease can be transmitted from one pond to another, by the shrimp and even all kinds of birds and insects. Tura’s syndrome causes disease within 2 to 4 weeks of post-larval storage. The most severe condition of the disease occurs before molting.

Symptoms of Tura Syndrome

The symptoms of this disease include softening of the shell, redness of the body and appendages and tail (also called red tail disease), empty digestive system, appearance of red pigments on the surface of the body and especially the tail of the shrimp.

Symptoms of Tura Syndrome

Yellow head disease is a type of viral disease, the reason for its name is the yellowing of the front part and the head of the shrimp. This virus affects shrimps from 5 to 15 grams. . Infected shrimp will eat profusely for 2 days and then suddenly stop feeding and swim to the sides of the pond. A few hours before death, their hepatopancreas is swollen and turns bright yellow. The location of the hepatopancreas in the cephalothorax causes this part to turn yellow. General paleness is observed in infected shrimps. After the appearance of clinical symptoms, losses begin within three days, and after 3 to 9 days, losses become 100%.

White spot disease

White spot disease (WSSD) is a virus that is one of the most commondiseases of farmed shrimp. Currently, most shrimp ponds are affected by this disease. White spot pathogens can easily be transmitted by other types of crustaceans, phytoplanktons and insect larvae.

Symptoms of white spot disease

The most common symptom of this disease is the appearance of white spots on the carapace, and then on the whole body of the shrimp. In addition, yellowing and discoloration of the hepatopancreas, dilution and non-coagulation of hemolymph, lethargy and loss of appetite, and the accumulation of shrimps on the sides of the pond are other symptoms of white spot disease. 2 to 7 days after the appearance of clinical symptoms, shrimp mortality occurs with 70 to 100% losses.
